Apple tree not faring too well

Can anyone help /share advice on what to do with a poorly apple tree ... it is at least  15 years old and 2 years ago was pruned .. since then it does bear fruit (not as much as it used too and this year some of the apples already have brown rings on the skin ) and a lot of the leaves are withering ... last year there was also some white fluffy stuff appearing on the main  trunk and some of the branches.. there's been hardly any of this , this year. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

It's probably got apple scab, a fungal disease. There's a lot of it about this year. The woolly stuff is probably woolly aphids. Pruning apples will hold back fruiting especially if it's hard pruned and or done at the wrong time or incorrectly. Pansy is on the right track.

  • yep she had pruned apple trees before  and reckon prob about 50% ..it had got quite big .... any more thoughts on what I need to do now

Can you post a photo at all, Lisa?  If not, let us know if there are a lot of fast-growing vertical shoots which have appeared since the pruning.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • thanks .... will post photos tomorrow ... doesn't really look like the photo on the website am afraid ...by the way what are water shoots ?

  • are water shoots the fast growing vertical shoots bob the gardener refers too
