Can anyone help me identify this tree. What are the berries in the photo?

you describe them as berries, this suggests something small. How big are they?
In the sticks near Peterborough
It is an apple. If the fruit it is small then it maybe a Crab apple, but apple it is.

They are small. Diameter of just bigger than a 5 pence coin.
Agree with crab-apple. Some trees produce berry-sized fruit. See if you can find it here:

You all beat me to it - I was going to say crab apples.
