? Do I just need to make a trench of manure and then sow the courgettes or is there anything else to ensure they get a good start

Fertilize the ground in the Autumn, sow the seeds indoors in April, plant out in June. Allow 4ft in all directions, they love to sprawl
But as the others say, no need to start them til at least april

How to prepare the area I have chosen for Spring planting out
Courgettes and marrow like it rich, rich, rich. Compost and chicken manure pellets now -- Compost, Growmore or similar and manure in Spring. The ground must be well draining and they like sun.
True to Mel M's advice above - I've started prepping my 'courgette etc' raised bed with a liberal forking in of organic pelleted chicken manure, to be followed by the contents of the 'mature' compost bin in very short order.
**HotTip: Wilkos have many of their own-label seed packs at half price at present, courgettes included & (mostly) well in date!! Shop early for 2015.....??
My chickens are weeding and fertilising my courgette area ready for next year, saves me spreading it. this is what we also did last year and the plants were monsters. Had a few hiding and turning in to marrows so having an experiment with marrow wine - should be fun!
