  • Hi,

Seeds can be tricky so go for a good quality John Innes seed sowing compost.

Try having a look at http://allotment-web.org/articles-sowing-seeds-under-cover

I've had several good yrs using B&Q's Verve seed & cuttings compost. This yr no exception, so far. The composition is different from previous yrs, but still my first choice.

    I do then pot on/up into JI no2. J.

  • Coir pellets and a suitable windowsill propogator.  Excellent germination rates and very good healthy root systems.  Less mess than compost, and no peat content so very 'green'.  I have bought some aldi seed compost this year, next year I will be using the pellets exclusively (maybe not for beans unless I can get some mega-big coir pellets!

I used to buy seed compost but last few years have just bought multi-purpose and sieved it, results just as good, just taken care not to overwater, and than transplanted when needed. Do suppose it depends on what you are sowing, but my bog standard stuff does fine.

Soz re-read your question, stand by what I said about germination, but I also add grit to herbs when in final pot. Salads I've found fine in multi, veg depending on what & how long in the pots I'd maybe look to John Innes. Hope all grows well.
