I know that once this year's canes have finished you cut them down to the ground but do you prune next year's canes at the same time? I've got one cane which is probably about 7 or 8 foot long now... Or do I wait till spring and prune then to encourage bushing out? If so, how far do I prune..?

I have taken to trimming the new stems of my blackberry when it needs it - it likes to extend itself too far over the path. This just causes it to send out side shoots, and this year I seem to have more flowering spurs than usual.
