I have two, 2yr old cherry trees, managed to get a couple of cherries this year! however the trees are about 6ft tall, one stem only and no branches. How do I encourage the two trees to grow branches, do I need to prune it or am I just being impatient and leave the trees well alone?

I take it you are growing bushes not cordon?

Usually, when you buy a maiden tree it has feathers, or little side shoots. None at all on yours, just one long straight stick?

Well, if that is the case, your trees need taking down a peg or two. Or three. But you are too late for it this year.

Next spring, before the buds burst, cut the tree down to about three feet high. Then in summer   2014 the feathers will appear up what remains of the trunk. In spring 2015 you can cut back each of the feathers by half. Each feather will then produce side shoots and you are on your way to having cherries.
