Climate versus vegetables

I live in an area with a climate not unlike the Highlands. That means that any time the snow can arrive here, even when at the moment it is 15 C/ 60F during daytime and 2 C/ 35 F at nighttime. I am worried that when I sew peas they will die in the frost that can be up to -27 C/-16 F. And how do I know if my seeds are hardy? Jolanda

Jolanda, In Glasgow the latest I would sow peas is June. I suggest you wait until March before planting any in the soil though you could start them off in a greenhouse earlier. The seeds just rot in cold wet soil. Over the winter you could work on adding orgamic material to the area and researching which varieties do best where you are.
Dear Esspee, Thank you so very much. That was exactly what I had been expecting, but I didn't trust my own judgment. I am new to this garden and am learning...
We all are Jolanda. Good luck with the peas. My favourite is mange tout and prefer to have just enough for the pot. I love going outside, picking a large handful and cooking it immediately.
Round-seeded peas (as opposed to wrinkle-seeded ones) are for autumn sowing as they are hardier - however I don't know whether they're hardy enough for the temperatures Gardenviking mentions.
My thoughts about the variety Douce de Provence are that I imagine it originates in the south of France, and what may be hardy in Provence may not be hardy a lot further north.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I bought some in a garden centre in bristol last weekend. Ready to go
the name escapes me now but it does begin with A. They'll be planted out by the end of this month, I've just got to work out where
I just stick for the moment to what I know and that is not sewing until March. I miss out on certain stuff, but then at least I am certain that the winter does not take my harvest away. I sew purple peas mostly. Love them.
