growing asparagus in containers

Is it possible to grow them in containers? Thinking of giving a veg loving friend one but he has lost his border due to the landlord building a bike rack on the site.

The compost she's talking about is just a fibrous compost, and I'd be inclined to use a bigger pot than she is doing.
