Leeks

The one success I've had in this dismal summer is my leeks. They have been tremendous. Trouble is I don't want to use any for a few weeks and its the beginning of December. Will they be OK in the ground? Do they continue to grow? Will they rot? Any advice please.

Leave them in, they won't continue to grow and they won't rot. My neighbour grows 3-4 rows of leeks every year and leaves them in all winter and we have minus degrees and snow (like now!) most of the winter here in Switzerland.
One year I felt quite smug as the price of leeks rose in the supermarkets because of a prolonged (that is several weeks) period of frost. I had lots in the garden, but when I came to dig them out they were frozen in the ground! So, if we are in for a big freeze, dig a few and put them somewhere cool, but above ground, like a shed or garage.
Otherwise they will be fine in the ground, just make sure to use them before the hard flower stalk develops when they start to grow in the Spring.
Thanks Sue. Wondering how your neighbour finds them in the snow !! Thanks Onion. Just knew I could rely on a fellow countryman to advise me on leeks.
