Onion bulb gone soft

I planted some shed bought onion sets early this year. I had to shift most of them as I had planted them quickly. It has been on the dry side for me this year. I have noticed that almost all the onions have soft bulbs though all have good leaves. Is this a result of root disturbance mixed with dry conditions or is this a disease? Space is essential this year so if they need to go then I will lift.
Many thanks

Had they started bulbing before the move? If so, I fear that's the problem. My one and only attempt to move onions was a failure.
