i have a huge gooseberry bush which needs pruning. I cut back the side shoots last June by six inches and had a good harvest. However it is really much too big. Is it too late to prune now without losing next years crop?

Stuctural pruning is best done in winter and although it will limit next years crop it is much better to have a well formed bush and it will soon recover and be a nice shape.

Thank you jon24ty for the advice. I will have to arm myself with long prickle-proof gloves.

There was a good video on this site showing how to winter prune a gooseberry bush but there seems to be a problem with the link because it shows how to remove canker in apple trees http://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/projects/creative-projects/how-to-winter-prune-gooseberries-and-redcurrants/122.html
