Hey, I only got into growing my own fruit and veg last year and started of growing my own potatoes and herbs. This year I haven't had much luck growing anything because of the hot weather we had. I was just wondering if anyone could give me any advice.

The only thing missing this year was the water. With the use of a hosepipe, I had bumper crops all round.

Potatoes like a lot of water. Beans set better with frequent waterings.

Herbs like a dryish, free draining poor soil.

Are you growing in the soil or in pots.?

I'm growing in pots

Is that because you have no suitable soil/land?

The trouble with pots is you have to control everything. The soil/compost has to be right, they have to be fed regularly, you have to make sure they are not too wet, but they don't dry out.

You can get it right, but it's easier in the soil, especially if you have to factor in work, holidays, etc.

I do have a garden but because I live with my parents my mum will not let me use the garden soil to grow any veg. So I am having to use a greenhouse up on the patio area of the garden.
