vermiculite or perlite

HI folks

Can i use both or is it best to use one or the other.

    I thought they were both white image Maybe I've been putting rice cakes on my seedsimageimage

    Perlite is white, vermiculite is brown.

    By 'topping off' I assume you mean scattering on the tops of pots after seeding.  If you put plants outside, that poses the risk that it will blow away so I always use fine grit for that.
