Hi, new here so first of all, hello!

Now... I have a small/medium balcony which is quite shady. It gets a bit of sun in the mornings but thats about it.

I want to do something interesting with it plant wise... I tend to like things like grasses and plants with small flowers. I've also got a glass screen at one end, the frame of which could be used for something climb up... Anything edible is also an option!

If anyone has any suggestions of plants which would fit the bill, and are not too time consuming to take care of it would be hugely appreciated. Any other ideas welcome!

Thanks in advance

Hi Neil. Two things that might suit you are violas and carexes. The violas are small flowered with a long flowering season, like shade and are easy to look after. Lots of colours available too. Carex oshimensis Evergold is one I have here and it will take sun and shade and is evergreen. Green/gold variegates leaves in a nice mound. There's also the grass Hakonechloa which is bigger and has a similar colour - beautiful shape- not evergreen but has lovely colour later on. You could also have early bulbs in pots such as crocus and dwarf daffodils. They're just coming into GCs now so there will be plenty of choice in the next month or two. Hostas also like shade and there are loads of varieties available- most have large foliage but there are dwarf varieties too. The flowers are on a spire and are quite small- lilac or white.

Here's a pic of the carex I mentioned:

and this a dark viola I have:
