New allotment OMG...Part 2...

29 Aug 2017 20:03

Scroggin. The variety is 'halloween', I bought it as a seedling, it"s orange on the label! Do you think the labels could have been switched at the nursery.. ?

I'm also growing Rouge Vif d"Etampes, that's growing yellow.

Baby bear though is growing green but orange on the packet.

Have you thought about getting an allotment giddy123...

Hi, giddy123, good advise from scroggin and Gg.

It does look a useful tool.  Stuff like that wasn't available when I started growing veg in the back garden.

This forum is a useful source of advise. Keeping   a  diary and making a plan of the plot beds, recording on a map, what is grown where is useful.

I use a 3 yr rotation plan  and refer to a few reliable  books which help to remind me what can be grown where.

Talking to other plot holders is also a good resource.

Hope this has been helpful giddy123

No pears but four plums and a respectable crop of apples from two trees, two apple trees haven't fruited.

Tomato supports are crippling under the weight of the toms. Most are still green, ever so slow to turn red. I picked a couple of vines, they might fair better on a warm window sill.

Lots of small summer squash, still to small to pick though. Outdoor cues are doing nothing but GH cues are romping away.

One large pumpkin, about the size of a football.

Happy growing everyone...

Started off some winter vegs about 10days ago, chard and kale have two leaves.

I also bought some broccoli seedings and beetroot.

B&M have spring bulbs in. I bought some tulips, alliums and mixed daffs for 99p per pack.

I'm in Lancashire, Lancaster.

Being nearer to the Lakes and the coast, we get snow, lots of rain, and water restrictions, if there is a hint of a hot summer😎. Me thinks that is because our reservoirs are open air.

Although, we were hit with a late frost, so strawberries and early blossom fruit trees suffered, it's been a good yr here for fruit and veg.

Ever so impressed with your parsnips scroggin.

Never had alot of luck with parsnips or carrots.

Amazing spaces was good tonight, the flight simulator was unbelievable.

Pruned my fruit bushes this weekend and took some red and white currant cuttings. Seem to have lots of blackcurrant bushes but only red and White at home.

Started sowing hardy annuals for next year, not sure if they'll get through the winter though, I"ve loads of seeds so nothing to lose.

Allotment progress.

Have you decided on your planting plan. Will you have perennial fruit and veg beds?

At least a third of my plots perennial planting,

2 GH's take up more space and  cut flowers beds need to take in flowering times in order to have flowers to cut throughout the growing season.

Allotment progress.

Wow, what a good sized plot.

How many people are you growing for?

Gg. Hope the judges liked the garden.

Cucumber soup sounds good. I made broad bean soup with a glut and runner beans may start to go the same way.

You can't beat a bowl of home made soup. My father used to make pea and ham soup to die for...πŸ˜€

The shed has gone up next door, it's not been built that much further into his plot.... but does let in some light.

I managed to e-mail one of the committee members, someone has spoken to the guy about his shed and he's going to move it further on to his plot. Good result...πŸ‘

Rust spots on fruit trees...

13 Aug 2017 22:37

There are small rust spots on the leaves of my pear and cherry trees,   neither have produced any fruit. They were only planted in the autumn so wasn't expecting fruit this yr.

Should I be worried about the spots and my other fruit trees...

It"s a double doored shed, at least 6 by 6.

I've tried e-mailing the committee  but the mail keeps bouncing back. The plants will be in total shade, they already compete with a huge birch tree on the other side.

I'm sure he hasn't realised it will block the light.

Everyone sounds busy, some good harvests, not sure if my 2nd earliest had blight or just died back naturally. They had flowered. I've taken all the foilage off, will dig them up later in the week.

Collected about 45 flag Stones off my brother yesterday. The guy on next plot helped, we used his van so he got enough for a shed base. Noticed today he is going to put it right up against the fence blocking all the light off some of my fruit bushes...😟..not sure what to do about that...

I donated some slabs to the committee too, for a bar-b-cue area and kept about a dozen.

Vegatable grwoing book

10 Aug 2017 22:37

I would suggest getting a selection of books.

Dr D.G.Hessayan books are good.

Aura Garden Guides are good too, I'd recommend the Herbs, propagation and gardens for Wildlife books.

If you want to go organic Bob Flowerdews book, Organic garden basics is a good starting point .

I've beans, kale chillies, peppers, cougettes and toms harvesting well at present.

Was going to sow some kale for winter pickings. Is it too late to sow biennials for  next year?

Aldi have fruit bushes in, currants, blueberry, raspberries, grapes, cobiberry and blackberries. £1 79 each.

Have you had a good harvest of onions and shallots, scroggin. I was pleased with mine, garlic was mixed, some large bulbs some small.

GWRS. Enjoy Tenby and Lamphey

Cut an armful of flowers today.Gladioli, dahlias and sunflowers.

Wish I'd done more repeat sowing, zoomer makes a mental note to do this next yr. Beds are beginning to empty.

Spent most of my time chatting to other plot holders today. Took 8 bags of weeds to tip. Hoping to go to plot in morning.

Ginagibbs. Could be slugs in the spuds.

Been lucky here, no blight this yr and toms are romping away in GH.

Courgettes just starting to bear fruit.

Silly Question, but can currants be dried and how is it done. Was going to try jelly and jam but there's only so much jam you can make and eat...πŸ˜€

Gg, let us know how you get on at next weeks show.

I had a productive time on the plot today, got lots of jobs done.

I've been clearing spent flowers. Any suggestions as to what to sow to fill gaps, I was thinking lettuce and radish.

Moved leeks from a nursery bed to main winter bed. Ever so pleased with spud crop.

Didn't rain until 3ish...,πŸ˜€
