Could it be Sweet Autum Clematis, Clematis Terniflora?

They thrive on neglect, apparently

Could be one of the herbaceous (non climbing) ones - possibly  Edward Pritchard?   http://www.taylorsclematis.co.uk/clematis-edward_pritchard.html

Nut it's about 3' high and 6' spread lengthways, depth about 4'. Approx 10 yrs old and clambering over a low mesh boundry fence. Neighbour cuts his side back after it flowers and I cut ours when we can't get to the side of the shed. I don't think it has any inclination to climb or it would be into the Mahonia on the left of it.

I don't think that's big enough

Though it doesn't climb it cover  a fair sized piece of ground
