Pruning after flowering is always best.

Yours is probably a Montana or armandii.

So pruning is normally just to tidy and keep in its place.

If serious pruning is needed, doing so now gives the plant time to regrow and flower next year. Although flowering will be limited.

Clematis that flower in summer - late summer, can mostly be pruned in spring, due to flowering on new growth. Viticellas, for example.

Stuff like clematis cirrhosa tend to be semi evergreen, and only need dead wood removing or tidying after flowering in winter/ spring

If in doubt, leave it out.

You won't kill a Clematis by doing nothing,  it will just lose it's shape gradually, and some flowering potential

Rule is simple, before June, don't prune.
