Placed some asparagus seeds in a 4 inch wide pot about 4 weeks ago and I now have a very spindly green frond which is droopy and seems to have stopped growing
? What do I do next please friends
I realise that its a long haul to get them in the ground
How tall are they?
Move to a cool, light area such as a windowsill, but keep them out of direct sunlight.
Once the threat of frost is over they will need to be gradually accustomed to conditions outside 'hardened off' this can take 2-3 weeks. Then move them out into the asparagus bed.
The best time to sow asparagus seeds is around mid-April, directly into the beds.
They should look like this.
4 to 6 inches and there are 3 or 4 in each pot so I have about 16 altogether
They are about half the size of yours from the photo
They are in my conservatory which currently gets the sun only briefly in the mornings. In Summer it is quite warm
? Can I just place them outside for a few hours a day from say March onwards
Thin them down to 2 per pot. Is the conservatory heated? I would leave them for a few weeks yet and then harden off in a cold frame if you have one. If you don't then just put them outside during the day and take them back in at night. Just avoid frost!
EDIT: The pic is from the internet as mine are well established now.
I hope you are in for the long haul!
I sowed some asparagus seed last year like you in modules and planted them out in the summer in a specially prepared bed in my son's garden. They grew quite well and I have lots of tall wispery aparagus ferns. The family joke is that is that they will be my son's inheritance by the time they are thick enough to cut. Now I know why aparagus crowns are the way to go if you can afford them.
Conservatory is not heated but will give them an airing when appropriate
Will let you know in Spring 2016 then !!
