growing fatsia japonica from cuttings

Hiya Folks!

I have made this request before, but had little response.  Has anyone got any advice (or experience), regarding growing fatsia japonica from cuttings?  I tried taking some last year, but without success.  Very disappointed.  I'd really appreciate some information on the subject.

Try this ink to the RHS, they're usually done by semi-ripe cuttings.

  • The other option which might work are air layered cuttings.  These are grown on the plant so are fed and watered by the mother plant before being removed.  It may look a  little odd but probably the best method.

Air layering certainly works, here is a how to and other links:

They do grow fast from seed, and there are a lot of flowering Fatsia around to get free fresh seed from.

  • It's also worth trying them from seed. I sowed some last year and now have eight super, sturdy little plants about four inches tall.

They have overwintered in my cold greenhouse in three inch pots, and I'll be potting them into five inch pots as soon as weather warms up.

Many thanks to everyone for the information above.  VERY much appreciated.  I'll try again with cuttings and seeds via the methods you've mentioned.
