Shelley, I too had an ugly mass of sticks - I decided it was dead, cut it down to a stump and planted a couple of clematis to grow up it. As soon as the sun came out, the entire stump covered itself in shoots - more through luck than judgement the clematis came into flower with a lovely new green backdrop and by the time they had finished their display, the buddleia shoots had grown and came into bloom shortly after. I'm really pleased with the result and am going to prune it that hard next year too.
