I have a very large hydrangea and I need to cut it back. Any ideas on how I go about this?
I have just this minute come in from doing my mum's.
What I did was take off all the dead flower heads back as far as the first strongly growing pair of buds. But if you need to prune it more heavily, what you need is an expert...
As Verdun says but I won't be cutting back until end of March.
a frost will have those exposed buds and turn them black, you will then have to do it all again down to the next set of buds.
of course, if you are in a warm area and don't get frosts, then go ahead if you really have to.
...depends where you are. Coasts and cities will get off more lightly than elsewhere.
