Importing seeds

Oakley WitchOakley Witch Posts: 789

Evening

Has anyone ever imported seeds from the USA before? If so...how much import tax do you usually pay and are there some I can not fetch in through customs? Also...who would I contact to see if there is a list of what I can and can not import in?

Thanks in advance

Defra has a list of what you can import.

  • Defra doesn’t provide lists for the amateur gardener, only professional importers. Has anyone bought seed from USA since Brexit?

As far as I know it is illegal to import any seed or plant or plant material that does not have a phyto sanitary certificate recognised by the UK.   These are expensive and also laborious to obtain which is why UK companies are no longer either exporting to or importing from Europe and Northern Ireland as they did before Brexit.

The big Dutch producers operate on a scale which makes it worth it but I doubt any USA seed or plant company has the volumes of sales to make it worth their while.   It is definitely not clever to risk importing uncertified seeds or plants which may harbour pathogens or other unwanted visitors that would wreak havoc in unsuspecting plant life.

There are many seed suppliers in the UK that specialise in more unusual plants so why not try them first.
