I have recently planted a hedge made up of common laurel and cherry laurel does this matter at all, it wasn't intentional and only realised once I had googled the names they were two different types of laurels?

I think you will find there is no difference - they are both prunus laurocerasus, which can be known both as Common or Cherry laurel.

The only difference I noticed was the leaves are slightly bigger on what I thought was a common laurel?

Probably better grown

pandp is right about them being different common names for the same thing

There are dozens of clones of Cherry Laurel with varying sizes of leaf, you may have two different clones.
