Probably the poor weather. The plants like a rich soil, and nutrients will have been washed away by the incessant rain, so they may have been hungry. Also, they like the ground well drained - some hope this year!

A bit of warmth would have helped as well.

Absolutely agree - blame the weather! In the spring give the poor things some fertiliser to restore the nutrients to the soil and hope and pray for sunshine
