Novice Gardner - help with plant appreciated
Hi all
I am a very novice gardener having inherited a semi-established garden when we bought our place back in December. I have started to get an interest into the plants and shrubs in the garden and have used the Tree and Shrub Expert to help me out.
However, I am really struggling with the one in the photos I have attached. Any ideas? If you do know, any tips on pruning as currently it is blocking the path down the side of our house but I don't want to potentially do something that will kill it.
Thanks so much.

One of the Weigelas. Usually does not get pruned, except to remove dead or crossing branches to keep an open shape. Any pruning is done after flowering has finished.
When ours blocks the path I just take the shears to it and cut it back when needed.
Wow, that is stunning! Wish I knew what it is, I would buy one. Is it flowering now?
Thank you so much Berghill and Verdun much appreciated - great advice. I will let it be for now and wait until it has stopped flowering before I cut back.
Determined to do the right thing by this garden as the people we bought off were very keen and it would be a shame to ruin their hard word.
Oneofseven, it is indeed flowering now, came in about 9 days ago. Bees are going mad for it.
Fantastic looking specimen! Easy to take cuttings from, too!!

Great stuff Adam - thank you
What an amazing specimen! How tall is it? I didn't know Weigela grew so big.
Hi clk, thanks so much. I would say about 8ft high....you can see in this picture from the side as a reference to the laburnum behind it. They are on the south facing wall.
Wow! And it's flowering so profusely as well. Lovely garden.
i went to my daughters house yesterday and she has this one and it is also flowering like yours. I took a large cutting and as i didn't know what it was then i took it with me to the garden centre and they said weigella but not which type. I have done about 15 cuttings of all sorts so will see what happens.
How long do cuttings take to root normally, i have them in a mix of compost, vermi?something & sharp sand in equal measure, i have them covered by a plastic bag in the shade outside ?
thanks
