Plant identification

We moved to our new home ten months ago and so this is the first season for us with our new garden. it is a Victorian former railway house in Lincolnshire. This flower has just come up on a verge and I have no idea what it is. The leaves resemble a delphinium and the colour is a beautiful violet blue. It is about 1 metre tall. However, the flowers have a hooded appearance at the top the like of which I have never seen! The buds look like beans. Anybody out there who can throw some light on this for me please! image

Aconitum. Poisonous, but so are many things ( rhubarb leaves for example )

I've grown it for years including when my kids were young. Don't believe the Daily ( Hate ) Mail. It won't sneak up and kill you in your bed at night.

    Devon.
  • Monkshood, Aconitum napellus.

  • It's an aconitum, sometimes known as Wolf's bane or Monkshood.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks guys - this old house gets better by the day!

Not worried about the poisonous bit, just glad to see such a lovely plant. Will definitely keep it.
