Could anyone tell me what this is please. I think it's beautiful, it's in a neighbours garden and I want one Also is it easy to propagate from a cutting.
Cotinus Jack. You can do cuttings - not sure if they're softwood or hardwood ones and I think you you can layer them but since it's the neighbour's that would be tricky, and I presume you just want to nick a bit....
I think you'd have to wait a while to get a decent sized shrub though. Probably best to see if you can get one in plant sales in GCs or nurseries in early autumn. They're pretty easy to get hold of - most places sell them.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
They are notorious for being difficult to propagate by cuttings. I have tried layering and had success once but failed ever since. Yes Jack, as Fairygirl says they are easy to find in most garden centres so give yourself a treat as they are lovely bushes. You can cut them back hard in the spring and they put on growth the same year and they look great.
It looks like cotinus coggygria \Royal Purple'. They can get quite big but easy enough to cut back in the spring and trim during the summer. I trimmed mine today in fact.

Ah smoke bush, I've seen them. Wonder which type this one is, there seems to be a few different ones.
Thanks Forester2 I will do that! Just trying to work out which one this is now. It is massive, about 4m with big leaves.

Ah, ok cheers Forester2. I'll have to have a look at the local Nursery for one. They do look great!
Pic of mine Jack.
The dark red leaves.
