I'm looking at the slimmer trunk out to the right and wondering if the big tree is the rootstock tree. The bit on the right has reddish leaves
My thoughts exactly, nut! Folks, that's what happens if you don't remove growth from beneath the graft union on a grafted tree..
Tippers: I'd have no qualms in felling the whole thing and replacing it with a tree you like - the red-leaved bit will never make a nice shape now, no matter how it is pruned.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
