Please can anyone identify this tree?  I have one in my garden that is about 30 foot tall, I also see them out walking in a local wood and they are anything up to 40 foot tall.  The flowers smell like lilac to me.

I think it could well be a white Lilac - beautiful and so fragrant.  Enjoy it!

Thank you for confirming it is a lilac, I did a little internet search and I think it could be a syringa reticulata - Japanese lilac.

The flowers in the picture above are about 3 inches long.

They don't look like lilac leaves. Could be a Prunus, P.padus maybe

Looks like a solanum to me. There is a white version when I googled it.

Nutcutlet gets the ID again!  Yes, it's a Prunus padus, here is a lovely link that describes it in detail, right down to the two little glands on the leave (that mine have)

Thank you GW people, I knew you wouldn't let me down!

Cross posted!  Very interesting that the Woodland Trust link calls it wild lilac, I asked a local who couldn't identify it, saying I thought it could be a 'wild lilac'
