Hi!
I'm a total novice to any sort of gardening and wanted to grow some sunflowers with my daughter.
Firstly - are they ok to grow in tubs?
Secondly - can I put something else in the tub with them?
Thanks

They'll grow fine in tubs.. but will need extra care and attention, and perhaps staking for the very largest varieties. You can plant something else in there with them too.. maybe some nasturtiums? Or lobelia? Something that tumbled out would look lovely, I think. Maybe even a tumbling tom tomato? Plenty of water, good quality soil, and an occasional feed, and you'll be great. What a great thing to do with your daughter.
Thanks! I love lobelia so that might be just the thing!
When you say that the sunflowers in tubs would need a little extra care and attention - what should I be doing?
The variety that I have got is 'skyscraper' so i guess theyare going to be big!
You could fix a rope to come out of your upstairs bedroom window to support them, they are hungry plants I always think the very tall ones are better in the ground, and the dwarf ones in pots.
Yes - I've heard that before about large sunflowers being better in the ground Lyn.... the issue is that where I want to put them - there's no flower bed - so I was hoping pots would be ok.... I'll try to get deep pots I guess. I hope they will be ok.
I have canes - the rope idea is great....but I live in a bungalow!
Watering will be no problem Verdun - my daughter (who's 2) loves helping to water the garden!
Even sunflowers planted in the ground need staking or tieing to some sort of support - mine will be up against a 2 metre tall fence and tied in.
You'll have to find some way of holding yours upright - it would be such a shame to come outside one morning and find it had blown over

i was wondering if anyone had tried sowing 'bird seed' sunflower seeds and did they grow or have they been treated in some way?
oh thanks ceres it occurred to me when i noticed them in the rhubarb planter where they fall from the bird feeders while i was slug hunting (in tartan pj's, work boots and a torch late at night hahaha)
I boight a half kilo of seeds at the pet shop in the market for less than the price of a seed packet. They grew fine, a couple of metres high in poor soil.
