Ants on a Twisted Hazel Tree - Problem?

Hi
I planted a small twisted hazel tree earlier this year which seems to be doing well and I love it. However I noticed at the weekend there are ants crawling all over the trunk and in the leaves. Is this a problem and are they harming it, does anyone know? I want to take action ASAP if I need to.... or are they harmless and OK to leave alone?
Thanks for any help that can be given .

They will be after aphids in the tree. I don't consider that a problem, I garden for wildlife.

Hi Amanda. If you feel you've got a problem it's the aphids that will be causing it not the ants. I like to leave the aphids for the birds to eat. Some people like to kill them. It all depends on you and your views on gardening and wildlife. The aphids won't damage the tree, just make some of the leaves curl
