I have two bay trees - one is very healthy whilst the other is being eaten by something. I have noticed ants in the pot, could this be the problem?
From some recent posts I understand that ants don't eat plants but do feed on pests, so maybe have a really close look at leaves and under surface of compost.
What does the damage look like? If it's notches around the edges of the leaves then vine weevil could be the culprit.
Although an ant's nest in the compost could cause problems I don't think ants would actually eat the leaves or shoots of a bay tree.
Thank, there are definite notches on the leaves. I have been spraying and the new shoots are very healthy. I wont blame the ants then but not too happy with them as they found a gap and came in the hallway!
