what would be best for greening up a new lawn. thanks
Is it new as in newly laid bluejan, and is it weedy/mossy etc? New lawns usually have to be left for a while before you use anything on them I think.
If lawn is 6months old use liquid lawn food. No weedkiller as in weed n feed. Don't feed before then.
Fred says water. But Make sure lawn is well watered a day before you apply lawn food. Ideally water in the evening and feed next evening. Wouldn't do it during this hot weather though.
thanks all, seed was sown in may I put a good lawn fertiliser down before the seed it came through lovely and green, now it has started to yellow a bit. I did read that i can not use 4 in 1 on new grass, weeds are not a problem, as for the water Fred I do not think that is the answer it does get well watered. Verdun have I not to feed it till it is 6 months old?
Bluejan- usually you leave new grass to establish for a while before giving it anything which is why Verdun's saying 6 months. If it's only been sewn in May it's too early for feeding. I'd just see that it doesn't go short of water over the summer, cut regularly (little and often, don't scalp it) and let it get it's roots down. Pick out any weeds that seed in. By autumn it will be ready to give it something extra if you want but that's a different food from the one you'd use at the start of the growing season.
No bluejan, even light feed is best avoided....so nothing this summer if you sowed in May. Some recommend an autumn feed but I'm not really convinced. Regular mowing, not too low, and regular watering is your best policy.
Feed next spring
DO NOT feed a lawn sown only 2-3 months ago and certainly do not use selective weed killers at this stage even if some weeds appear. Lawn feed can be used in the form of `Lawn Sand` available from garden centres next mid March depending on the temperature - this year in Cheshire, the temperature rarely reached above 40 degrees F. in March meaning that the Lawn Sand was not applied until mid April.
This will rapidly green-up the grass and help the new lawn to thicken up ready for the first summer fertiliser in early May.
No feed and weed
Feed or feed and weed next spring
Thanks all, I did some research and found out if I feed it would be at the expence of the roots. Your a clever lot on this forum
Of course bluejan.......lol
