Hi - I seem to have an infestation of the above critters, they're just like sand hoppers only brown & they're all tucked in under pots etc. Having been on the internet I see they're not insects but crustaceans from OZ? I believe they must have been introduced with a plant/s but have got to silly amounts now & I want to know how to get rid of them. My neighbours do not have any.
I used RAID the fly spray on them the other day which worked but nearly caused me to expire with the smell!
Has anyone else got these pests & safely got rid of them & do they cause any damage in the garden?
As they jump about so much it's difficult to photograph!
From what I can find out they are crustaceans and like woodlice in that they live on garden detritus - doing no damage to healthy plants. Therefore there is no need to spray or treat with insecticides which will kill all insects indiscriminately.
The best way of reducing numbers is to practice good garden hygiene, removing dead and decaying matter around plant pots etc.
