Clay soil and lawns

Hello
The soil at the back of my house is clay. Every year, I lay down new grass seed with superficially pleasing results. However, come the autumn and beyond, it finishes up looking like a neglected field.
This morning, I took a spade to it and dug half of it up, turning over the clay and breaking it up. I'm doing the other half tomorrow and will then level it all out in the hope that I'm doing something right.
Funds are tight and it's cost me nothing so far. The question is, is there anything I should put down while the soil is disturbed? I could stretch to a big bag of sharp sand which somebody at work has mentioned.
Any advice much appreciated.

Seems that organic matter + sharp sand is (one of) the way forwards depending on depth of clay and your expectations for lawn quality.
