Damaged camelia

Is there anything i can do to repair the damage to this camelia  it has been accidently damaged by someone and a big slice of the bark has come off.  

I feel if this isnt sorted, the shrub could

become diseased or something....anyone got any ideas????

    Flower bird, I believe the RHS now advise against using any kind of wound paint on trees etc as it seems to retard the natural healing process.

    I would remove that short stump just above it though - cut it almost flush.  That dead stub is an entry point for disease and should never be left.

    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    That just means cut it right back to the trunk, so there is almost nothing sticking out. image
