Evergreen Lawn

Hi

I have had a new lawn laid about 3 months ago, it has started to look a bit thin, we gave it a feed of Evergreen this week and used the applicator. My question is on the packaging it says use regularly but how regular and how can I thicken it up. I noticed on one thread that cutting once a week will help thicken the lawn so will try this. I think we may have left the first cut to long but not really sure as we have never had a new lawn and not really confident gardeners. Would really appreciate some advice. regards Chris

When you say 'new lawn  laid' was this turf or seeded?  I'll presume turf as you said 'laid'.   It's a shame your suppliers didn't give you aftercare instructions.  Regular cutting is what your lawn needs - not too short or you'll scalp it - but regular little and often - at this time of year it should be growing well (particularly after all the rain we've had) so it probably needs mowing twice a week if possible.  In the summer lawns should be cut at least once a week minimum.

This link will give you some tips on cutting your lawn  http://www.rolawn.co.uk/mowing-your-turf.html

As for the fertiliser - you can use it once every 6 weeks between spring and September, then in the autumn give it a dose of an Autumn lawn feed - this usually contains something that will kill any moss that is establishing in the lawn, as well as a slow acting fertiliser that will work all winter.

Don't worry about not being confident gardeners - we've all had to learn somewhere and we all make mistakes - the friendly lot on here are happy to help each other out so just ask if you're not sure image

    Hi

Thanks for the great advice and the link to Rolawn was very informative. The lawn suppplier did give us a leaflet and we thought we had done everything correct. I think if needs some feeding and will keep up with the cutting, I didn't realise that cutting it at least once a week would encourage growth.  The feed I got is for feeding and conditioning the lawn so will keep up with that and hope it come back. Thanks again Chris

  • I have laid a new lawn 4 months ago using rolawn minster pro turf, a fine show lawn grade and have had numerous commments on how lovely it looks.  I cut it every 48 hours , yes i know how sad is that but it has done the trick and produced the end result i was hoping for. I am now feeding it with aftercut and will do this every 8 weeks or so up till august and then i will use an autumn weed feed product to harden it up for the winter.

thanks again.  We mowed the lawn last week and I put some Lawn feed and conditioner on it and we mowed it again on Wednesday and it is looking alot better, some shading at the moment but a definite improvement, will mow again when the rain stops and the lawn is a bit dryer.

    Hi

Just another question regarding feeding lawns, I used Evergreen Lawn feed without the weedkiller in and as mentioned it seems to be working.  It is nearly two weeks since I used it and everthough the lawn is looking better there still are some pale patches, my question is could I use this lawn feed again next week.  It does say on the packages use regularly well you could say every week is regularly.  What would you suggest.

    regards

No don't use it again that soon - (using that reasoning you could say that every 10 minutes was regular image).

No if you do that you'll get an imbalance of nutrients in the soil and the grass will initially get too soft and lush, then it'll get poor again because of the imbalance.  You're a little impatient image and gardening will help you learn to be more patient - your lawn will settle down and it'll be great - but it is always going to be a work in progress - you have to learn to love the process as well as the finished effect.image

i get green thumb in it costs me less £15 for the front lawn instead of 2 x tubs of evergreen at £16.99 when i last bought some..  and they weed with stronger weed killer as chemicals can only be used by specialist people.. (not found in shop bought ones) and it works very fast..after 2 doings we had no weeds amazing it is green thick and lush.. and they come over 3 months.. then aireate and scarify twice a year.. lawn never been better..
