I'm not sure what they are?

Hi all,

Not sure I've dropped this in the right category.

I have several what look like small red bees in my garden, they burrow into the ground, making a perfectly round hole in the centre of a mound of earth.

Are they bees? They are very close to my front door and they're making a fair few holes. Do I need to be worried? Do they sting?

Thank you all and with apologies that I'm still not great on knowing all my bees and whether they're all harmless or now.

Sound like one of the mining bees. They do not normally sting. Leave them alone and they will soon disappear, once they have laid an egg and filled the hole with pollen for the developing grub.

  • OK Berghill that's comforting to know, thank you. I don't mind them being around so much so long as I know what I'm dealing with, it was more the proximity to the front door. Thank you.
