Its time to go...but how?

image

It's time for this monster to go, and maybe it's friend in the front right.

It's not that I hate it, just would prefer something pretty. First thought was an acer (currently in  a pot) but think it would nt be sheltered enough.

Anyway, any tips how to get the brute out?

Should I cut it back first or will the leaves help with leverage?

Cut off the outer ones so it's easier to dig out the roots but leave the mass at the centre so you have something to pull.

I've removed a large phormium. It wasn't as deep rooted as I expected.image
