I have a friend who lives on the South coast who is renovating her garden. She has two beautiful Japanese Acers which were planted by the previous owner of the garden. Unfortunately, despite looking fantastic, they are not in her new garden scheme due to the size and location of them. I did suggest that they could be reduced in size if done professionally, but she is clear that despite how good they look, they need to come out. I think it would be sad to lose such wonderful specimens, so suggested the idea of having them professionally dug up, and then taken away for transplanting. Does anybody know of any companies in or around Sussex or Kent that provides such a service. These trees are not cheap to buy even when relatively young so could be a way of somebody to make a bit of money.
I was just admiring the acers at RHS Wisley yesterday and thinking how good they would look in my garden. As you say though I have seen the prices for mature specimens and that isn't going to happen any time soon.
Try local garden centres, they will have the expertise and equipment. Or maybe Freecycle. Now is probably the worst time to move them, delaying until leaf fall would be so much better if at all possible.
