Lilac trees and veg!

I want to prepare a veg patch in a newly cleared site....but it is overshadowed by a Lilac Tree....(very close).is this going to be a problem, does anyone kknow? And, can someone advise me on how to go about preparing a site that had previously had an old pear tree in it; Im guessing it needs a lot of additional help, does anyone know if there' anything I need to look out for particuarly?

Thanks

You'll have to consider light morena. Although quite a few veg don't mind shade, as does some fruit, full light is preferred. I'd add as much well composted material as you can. It should have been done in the Autumn really. You can't grow root veg in freshly manured ground but everything else is okay. A top dressing of fish blood and bone will help as well. Lilac suckers can be a problem but they can be removed reasonably easily. Otherwise best of luck.
