Magnolia

We have recently moved into a new house and a what looks like a mature magnolia has been previously very heavily attacked (we think a couple of years ago). We removed a fir that was shadowing it and since the magnolia has sprung to life but with loads and loads of watershoots. How should i deal with these watershoots and will the magnolia ever gain its shape again? Any help welcome

A picture might help David. You can prune out water shoots but often they come straight back so it's a difficult one.
