Miserable Gypsophilla

I have a very sorry looking Gypsophilla I grew from seed last year, it's in a pot, it grew all out of shape trying to get to the sun and I think I should have cut it back to the ground in autumn? but didn't. I planted one in the border but there's no sign of it and I think it might have drowned so I'm hoping I can revive the potted one to replace it, should I cut it back now? it has lots of straggly stems and a few leaves.

I have a few gyp in the garden; they never appear till much later in the spring, rather like teenagers who don't get up till lunch timeimage

So you think the one in the border might still be alive Artjak?
