New lawn going brown

Hi
Just joined the forum, and am a relative newbie at gardening, so this is my first post.
I moved into my new build house last year, and did the garden at the end of September. Its been sown for over a year now, but the main lawn is not looking good. I know it is full of buttercups, but the grass itself has gone brown and looks pretty dead.
Any ideas what the problem could be? Are the buttercups killing the grass?
I cant seem to be able to upload more than one picture so I will add more close ups in next post.

When was the first photo taken? It looks as if the lawn has been freshly mowed then frosted - is that possible?
As for the buttercups - wait until the spring and then treat the lawn with a 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 Spring lawn treatment - this will include a selective weedkiller to kill the broadleaved weeds and a fertiliser to give the grass a boost.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Or been left too long and then scalped perhaps.....
New builds often have poor, compacted ground which builders just chuck turf down on top of, so that can cause ongoing issues. What is the underlying soil like and what are the general conditions in the garden?
Any extra info you can give will help with further advice
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hi I would leave the lawn till spring then give it a weed and feed to sort it out.
Its best to keep off the grass till the weather warms up then if there is still loads of dead grass
you could scarify it before the first mow but keep the blades high.
Its just a case of wait and see but I go on the old saying, you cannot kill grass. Good Luck..
The first photo was taken last week. I havent cut the grass since well before the frost kicked in, Id say start of October possibly, when it was still very mild, temperature wise.
I will try the weedkiller in Spring time. I did give it a very diluted spray of Agritox, which has killed some of the buttercups, but not a lot, as I wasnt sure of the affect it would have on the garden.
I sowed the lawn myself last year, and there was a lot of topsoil put down. There would have been a track across the middle of the lawn made when we were doing the ground works, but there would still have been 4-5 ft of topsoil added on top of this. The soil should be good draining soil, as we were able to put a standard septic tank in.
Thanks for the replies folks. I will try your suggestions and see how it goes next year.Might have to get the professionals in if it doesnt improve before the summer.
