If the soil is hard and dry the worms may be deeper down.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
You need to add compost or well rotted manure and or leaf mould to the soil. If there are no worms it means there's nothing for them to feed on. It's a sign of tired soil, so the more you add the more worms you'll get as they are vital for soil health.
get a compost heap started, when you turn it over you will find millions of them.
ive added some garden compost ,the soil is light with a little sand in placses ,I was going to try dry chicken manure you buy online would that help do you think
I'd get some bags of well rotted farm yard manure from the garden centre and dig that in

great I will dig in the muck so to speak thanks
I had similar problem last year. i have a shared garden so didn't want to spend any unnecessary money on my small allocated plot. A few months ago, I dug trenches and filled with as much veg peelings etc as i could get and then covered over with soil and black plastic builders bags. Now time has passed and i've lifted the covers[seems to have done the trick and we've now got some worms! cheap and easy way to do it i reckon.
