I have 4 round  large buxus in containers. When is the best time to shape/prunw them

I have see online July and Septemeber but dont know what is correct.

you whant to get them pruned by the end of sept or mid oct, dont wont them to get burnt by the frost, plus there growth will slow down now, hope this helps

I prune in June, as I put larger cuttings in a pot to root (they root by August). I also trim about now. You cit the lighter coloured leaves, not the darker ones which are last years growth.

The wisdom is to prune on "Derby Day" - which is first weekend of June. 

Not a great horse racing fan myself, but once I was told that it means I never forget to get going with the shears !

Agree with Chicky- Derby day, 1st week of June & a couple of weeks after the Chelsea chop around here!

I also do a light trim in September if needed. J.
