To feed or not to feed ???

hello, I have a few shrubs in very large ornamental containers that are looking a bit down. we've had a quite a dry summer (for Wales that is !!) and although I watered regularly perhaps I should have also fed them as well ???

my questions are -- should I feed them every year and should I also try and remove some of the top layer of compost and replace this with some new stuff as well ??

many thanks

Shazza, you have to feed any plants in pots. Feed with a general purpose fertilzer and remove the top layer of compost every year. I normally do this in spring, but you can do it now if they are looking a bit sad.

They rely entirely on you for their food; maybe they exhausted the food in the pots long ago.

I agree with Dave and also suggest you use a John Innes No3 when you replace the top layer of compost as that formula is designed for permanent container planting.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
