Looks like Acacia dealbata or silver wattle or florists mimosa.

  • This is a very large tree in the grounds of a cottage I look after.  It was blown out of the ground on Friday night.  Such a shame as it has masses of snowdrops at its base.  I will rescue and replant the snowdrops though.

the sensitive plant or mimosa pudica is not related.

  • Thank you all for your replies, much appreciated !

  • I believe the garden was planted by Sir Max Edgar Lucien Mallowan . Such a shame this tree has been lost

Edd, Acacia dealbata is an australian  legume. the australians call them wattles.

Mimosa pudica  comes under the family fabaceae. the seeds are not in the peapod style that the legumes are.

I assume they are both called mimosa because the fluffy flowers are similar, although one is yellow and the other pink. I think this shows the importance of binomial names as opposed to common names to identify plants.
