Vine Weevil Grubs in the lawn

Hello, I have bought loads of fruit trees to plant in the top lawn and need to get them in very soon, so I started planting yesterday only to find Vine Weevil Grubs in the lawn as I was digging the holes.  I obviously cant dig the whole lawn up to get at them and get rid of them but

 (1) is there anything I can do that will destroy them by adding something to the lawn?

{2) Can I continue with the planting of my fruit trees after getting rid of all grubs within that area that I can physically find?

Hi SomersetJoy, they're probably chafer grubs, which are more common in lawns than vine veevils (but look very similar). I wouldn't worry too much, they're unlikely to harm your fruit trees. If they're not making a mess of your lawn then I would do nothing. You can use a nematode to kill the grubs if you think that is necessary (Google chafer grub nematode). There are also chemical solutions on the market, but I would be wary of using these on the lawn if you intend to eat the fruit that is growing in it.

Thank you Kate, Yes, that has helped.  I have now googled 'chafer grub' and they do look similar to Vine weevil so you could be right, they could be chafers?  After a little reading about chafers I see that badgers like to dig up the lawn looking for them ... and by the mess and evidence I can now see why the badger comes nightly for a dig in my garden, so I guess thats why he comes! Thanks again as I had not even heard of them!

Ah so you do have badgers digging them up! I wondered if you did, but seeing as you didn't mention them...

So are you going to keep the grubs or get rid?

Hmn, I would like to get rid of the grubs And the Badgers.  I didnt know badgers fed on these grubs, I had not even heard of Chafer grubs, so perhaps I need one to get rid of the other?

What with badgers, squirrels and deer I guess they are the less destructive in my garden, deer being the worse but I do Love to see them!  I get Red and Roe deer with the Roe being Very resident!  Have loads of lovely photos of them in the garden But when they eat ALL my Roses and flowers I feel I can live without them.

So, my garden now looks like the Himalyers with 'prayer flag' type deterrants all around the perimeter ... done today so I can only wait and see if this works.  I dont know if they can wade up the stream but Hey Ho, I've tried.

You can use human hair to deter deer. They hate the smell. If you don't cut hair at home any barber would be happy for you to sweep up a bag from their floor. Avoid hairdressers though as the un-natural products used would mask the horrible smell of people.

Human hair doesn't work. I have a deer problem, nothing worked until we put a high fence around the veg. garden and fenced off the best bit of the flower garden. Last year they stripped roses and clematis and ate the tops off most of the perennials. They even ate the leaves of a big thick leaved hosta that the slugs don't touch.

Hi I am knew to the forum, have you thought about  artificial grass?  I hated the idea of it but a friend put me in touch with a company who specialise in this stuff and its pretty good, its saved me an absolute fortune on having the grass treated every month  - no more Japanese knot worm.

Artificial grass?  Evil stuff   As Verdun says, no wonder there's no wildlife in gardens .... and I'm suspicious of that post - it's just advertising IMHO!

And I've seen sheets of astroturf-like stuff floating down river in a flood !!!
