Suggestions please for what to buy to keep my one foot wide allotment paths permanently free of weeds and grass

Dont want to use gravel or paving stones

Carpet would be lovely and soft underfoot.

Maybe bark chippings on top of a weed supressing membrane, it won't keep the weeds permanently away but it will make it manageable.

I have  put in raised beds so i dont have to dig so much on my allotment plot. used a double layer or weed supressing membrane topped with bark chippings. Luckily at my allotment we get van loads of them. Need toppping up from time to time and i do get the occasional weed but a good blast of weed killer sorts it out. Certainly saves my back. Lady next to me swears by carpet and gets odds and ends from the carpet shop, the bits they were going to throw away.

i would advise the carpret route. No matter what you put down, you will always have a growing medium form on the surface. whether it is leaf mould, soil from the raised beds. Weeds will always germinate quickly. I use carpet, when it gets a bit too weedy, I just turn it over. Then replace after a few years.

Bark chipping and membrane would be my first choice. Using pine needles works well. They are highly acidic and compact nicely, stopping weeds and can be free if you have a plantation near your house/just after Christmas.
